StepsWeb's adaptive, structured approach makes it an ideal resource for SEND students, particularly older learners who are struggling with foundational skills.
Each pupil works at their own level and pace.
Activities adapt their appearance based on the chronological age of the learner, rather than their literacy ability.
Older looking activities allow older learners to use the program with confidence.
StepsWeb supports phonological awareness, phonic knowledge, reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Identify students who need intervention early and provide effective support to genuinely catch them up.
The program's primary aim is to stop students falling behind in literacy, thus freeing up resources for educators.
By catching up struggling students, teacher time will be freed up for more effective explicit teaching.
This Pilot Project aims to evaluate the implementation process of StepsWeb in UK schools. These insights will help us tailor the program and our support for UK educators and pupils.
During the first pilot, schools will have free access to StepsWeb over 30 weeks. With 24 weeks of teaching using StepsWeb. We will check in with schools regularly, giving you an opportunity to share your experience and ask any questions. Pilot 2 will be shorter, but will follow a similar framework.

StepsWeb's individualised and structured approach makes it an ideal resource to support groups of SEND students, or as a whole-class resource. See how other schools have implemented StepsWeb into their school.
After identifying a small group of students who were achieving below the expected literacy level, the staff felt StepsWeb offered a way for students to develop their literacy skills effectively while also having fun.
In 2023, a two-term independent study was conducted by RTLB 6 in six Primary Schools in West Auckland. The study set out to assess the impact of structured literacy approaches on literacy outcomes.
After initially using the program with small groups, the school trialled StepsWeb across several classrooms before expanding it to all Year 3–6 students. See their results after using StepsWeb as a whole-class resource in 2025.
There is no charge for participating in the pilot projects. StepsWeb access to the online program will be provided for free during the pilot.
Free educational and technical support will be available as needed.
StepsWeb saves teachers' time by providing a structured progression and ongoing reinforcement for students at any level. Teachers will receive weekly progress emails and on-demand reporting so they can quickly and easily gain an understanding of student progress.
Teachers participating in the pilot will be directed to our short, online training videos. The program is designed to integrate seamlessly into classroom routines. After pupils have been placed they continue working through activities on the Course at their own level. For good results, we ask teachers ensure their students complete their weekly goals - approximately 30-60 minutes of StepsWeb per week.
Ongoing technical and educational support is provided during the study.

StepsWeb is a flexible literacy program that can be used as a whole-class activity, for small groups, or for independent learning.
Students can access StepsWeb from almost any device with an internet connection, and they work at their own level and pace.
StepsWeb has been designed to be intuitive and easy to use. It contains sophisticated automations - including targeted reinforcement for students as they progress through the Course. The most important role for educators is integrating a minimum of 30-60 minutes a week on StepsWeb, ideally in multiple shorter sessions throughout the week. Monitoring students to ensure they are meeting their weekly activity goals is also crucial to see students make good progress.
