We're partnering with the Australian EdTech Innovation Network that connects leading EdTech companies with specialist researchers to explore how StepsWeb can support literacy development for students in Years 4-8 across Victoria and New South Wales.
The Australian EdTech Innovation Network is powered by Western Sydney University and EduGrowth, the Australian EdTech Industry Hub.
StepsWeb will be working with researchers from the Monash University Hub for Educational Design and Innovation (HEDI).
Primary schools in NSW or VIC with Year 4-8 students, ideally across entire year-groups. However, whole-class participation is also feasible.
22 weeks in total, including pre- and post-testing.
20 teaching weeks starting in Term 2.
There is no cost to participate. The StepsWeb online program will be provided for free, as will workbooks for struggling learners.
StepsWeb is an adaptive online literacy program designed to support all learners, including struggling and extension students. It provides structured, research-based activities grounded in the Science of Reading; developing phonological awareness, phonic knowledge, reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Students progress through the structured literacy progression at their own level and pace. StepsWeb continually monitors student progress, providing individualised reinforcement and diagnostic information about each learner.
Our primary aim is to stop students falling behind in literacy, thus freeing up resources for educators.
Identify students who need intervention early and provide effective intervention to genuinely catch them up.
By catching up struggling students, teacher time will be freed for more effective whole-class teaching.
We want to gain a better understanding of your experience, so we can tailor StepsWeb to Victoria and New South Wales classrooms.
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of StepsWeb in improving students' spelling ages, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. These insights will help us understand the impact of a structured literacy approach and provide valuable information into student progress across different learning levels.
Follow a structured progression which can be used for all learning abilities and never set a weekly spelling test again.
Use cutting-edge diagnostic tools, including our visual recognition test, which is an indicator of reading fluency.
You will have access to StepsWeb for free over the duration of the study. Workbooks will also be provided at no cost for Tier 3 and 4 students, and at a discounted rate for all other learners.
We will provide free personalised consultations to improve your teacher’s understanding of teaching literacy and using StepsWeb effectively for all your students.
Contribute to important literacy research and discover how a structured literacy approach can make a difference for all learners - including struggling students.
Gain a complete understanding of each student’s literacy progress with just a few clicks, including information on which areas of literacy need improvement, identify students who are falling behind, see which students aren’t meeting usage criteria, view your whole class’s progression on the structured course.
With on-demand reporting, instant individually-named and differentiated printables, and automatic reinforcement which adapts to each student, StepsWeb will help struggling learners get up to speed, and allow teachers to spend more time doing what they do best - teach.
StepsWeb contains a number of diagnostic assessments which identifies a student’s spelling age, reading fluency, or phonic knowledge. This ensures educators have all the information they need to make informed decisions and tailor their teaching.
This study will run over 22 weeks total. With 20 weeks of teaching using StepsWeb and one week at the beginning and the end of the intervention period for pre- and post- testing.

This study is being guided by Monash University, ensuring the final research report is accurate, data-driven, and delivers valuable insights. Their expertise will help shape the study design, analyse the data, and provide meaningful conclusions on how StepsWeb can best support good literacy outcomes for all learners.
We’re also working with EduGrowth, a leading education innovation network, to maximise the impact of this research. With their experience in supporting education studies, EduGrowth will help ensure the findings are shared widely - at major conferences such as EduTech and The Education Show, so more schools can benefit from evidence-based literacy solutions.
There is no charge for participating in the research study. StepsWeb access to the online program and training will be provided for free during the study. Workbooks for students in tiers 3 and 4 will be provided. Workbooks for other students in the study can be purchased at a discounted rate.
Free educational and technical support will be available as needed.
StepsWeb saves teachers' time by providing a structured progression and ongoing reinforcement for students at any level. Teachers will receive weekly progress emails and on-demand reporting so they can quickly and easily gain an understanding of student progress.
Teachers are given initial training, and the program is designed to integrate seamlessly into classroom routines. For good results, we ask teachers ensure their students complete their weekly goals - approximately 30-60 minutes of StepsWeb per week.
Ongoing technical and educational support is provided during the study.
Students will complete pre- and post-testing:
StepsWeb automatically tracks your students' progress, and gives insight into accuracy across different metrics as well as access to activity logs to give educators and parents more detail.
StepsWeb is a flexible literacy program that can be used as a whole-class activity, for small groups, or for independent learning.
Students can access StepsWeb from almost any device with an internet connection, and they work at their own level and pace.
